Remembering and Forgetting
In our life as human beings can not be
separated from the process of remembering and forgetting. Plus our position as
human beings who mention we are wrong place and forget. Then what is the
meaning of forgetting, what causes us to forget, is forgetting the same amnesia
as we receive from people's words? And what makes it easier for us to remember?
Forgot is our failure in encoding when we
process, recall, and display information in the brain. Basically our
forgetfulness is the lack or absence of attention to the information we
receive. An information we receive when we give attention to that information
will not be encoded in sensory memory, so that is what makes us forget. Or when
the reception of information we notice and can be encoded in the sensory memory
but we do not focus in encode in our STM so that our brain can not call again
the information we receive and display it again.
Forget or remember is an activity that
involves brain activity, especially memory. There are several factors that
cause a person to forget about an object that has been remembered. According to
Solso (1988), it is a failure to dig or recall information that has been stored
in memory or memory. Here are the theories of forgetfulness:
·
Failure
to encode refers to the failure to insert the material into LTM (long-term
memory). This is because the information learned does not really enter our
memory and also because of stress.
·
Consolidation
failure is memory loss due to organic faults that occur during memory trace
formation.
·
Decay
theory means the waning of memory over time or the rarely used memory.
·
Interference
theory is a mixture of similar memories.
·
Retroactive
interference (retroactive interference) occurs when new memory blocks old
memory memories.
·
Retrieval
failure is the inability to find the memory cue required in the memory.
Then what is meaning of remembering?
Remembering is calling back information ever stored in our memory. Did you
know, there are some unique methods for remembering a material and this is
called the Mnemonic technique). Here is a Mnemonic technique:
·
The
Loci method is a method that associates objects with specific places.
·
The
word dependent system (Peg word system) is a series of words that serve as
"hangers" to "hang" the memorized items.
The two sentences above are
examples of word system pegs where there are rhymes in common.
·
The
keyword method (key word method) is usually useful in the effort to learn a
foreign language.
·
Verbal
techniques
·
An
acronym is a word formed based on the first letters in a phrase or set of
words. An example of SD is an acronym from Elementary School.
·
The
acrostic is a phrase or sentence in which the first letters are associated with
words to remember. Example is an acrostic of the colors of the rainbow are red,
orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple.
·
Remembering
name
The use of mnemonic techniques can improve
a person's particular knowledge base, but knowledge organization remains a
vital element.
While Lorayne and Lucas (1974) found that
the process of studying a name associated with memory of the face involves
three stages:
·
The
initial stage, paying attention to the details of the pronunciation of the
name.
·
The
second stage involves searching for the prominent characteristics of the
person's face such as a thick mustache, broad forehead, large pug nose, and so
on.
·
The
final stage, involving the act of connecting the surrogate word with these
prominent characteristics.
